CEC Attends Model UN Conference

On Saturday 12th February 2022, nine of our year 12 students, accompanied by two staff members, took part in the Model United Nations conference organised by Ryde School.

In the lead up to the event, students had extensively researched the position of their designated country regarding the topics of the committee for which they were the representative. These committees were designed to represent real life issues from women’s right to education to security council issues and private military contractors. The students worked hard to prepare their position papers, setting out their country’s views, and a number also submitted resolutions – documents suggesting changes that the UN should make, written in a formal style to reflect real resolutions.

After the lobbying phase, during which the delegates from all participant schools met and tried to convince each other to counter-sign their resolutions, students spent the rest of the morning in committee meetings, debating and amending their resolutions. During the afternoon, all the delegates then represented their countries in the General Assembly, a meeting where a staged crisis regarding China invading Taiwan took place. This involved students making and submitting their proposals to a resolution which was created live, and involved some interesting and at times heated debate about the best way to resolve this challenging political situation. Finally, there was a short awards ceremony, where two of our students won awards for their excellent contributions during the committee meetings.

Mrs Wiltshire and Miss Kingswell-Cleaves said:

We were particularly proud of the way that our students conducted themselves throughout the day. It was very clear that our students had thoroughly researched their country’s position on all of the topics, and were therefore able to effectively reflect their real life position on these issues, maintaining their integrity even during intense debate.
