Cowes Celebrates Green Tree Schools Award

Cowes Enterprise College is celebrating after achieving the Woodland Trust’s Green Tree Schools Gold Award, recognising the academy’s commitment to outdoor learning, sustainability and protecting the environment.

The Green Tree Schools Award encourages pupils to get outdoors and develop a greater understanding and appreciation of trees, woods and wildlife. Through a range of fun and practical environmental activities, pupils can help improve their school grounds and make a positive difference to the environment.

As part of their work towards the award, pupils have been encouraged to look more closely at the natural environment around them and consider it from different perspectives. Woodland Trust activities have challenged students to think about how the world might look from the viewpoint of different creatures, helping them to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the wildlife and natural environment around them.

The environmental work has also provided opportunities for pupils from different year groups to come together through a shared interest in nature and protecting the environment, demonstrating how caring for the natural world can bring the academy community together.

Schools collect points by taking part in activities such as tree planting, reducing carbon emissions and visiting woodland areas, progressing through bronze, silver and gold levels towards the prestigious platinum award.

The programme also provides opportunities to bring environmental learning into the classroom, as well as supporting gardening and eco clubs, Forest School activities and wider environmental initiatives.Head of School, Ruth Griffiths-Nash, said:

“We are absolutely delighted to have achieved the Green Tree Schools Award! It is a fantastic recognition of the enthusiasm and commitment our pupils and staff have shown towards looking after our environment and making the most of the wonderful outdoor spaces around us.

“We want our young people to understand that even small actions can make a really big difference, and this award gives us a brilliant opportunity to learn, get involved and have fun while doing something positive for our Island, and the planet. We’re incredibly proud of everyone who has played a part in achieving this award and can’t wait to see what we can do next!”

The Eco Council is equally determined that achieving the award will be the beginning of continued action to protect and care for the environment.

Sixth Form Student Leaders said:

“We will continue our hard work to help look after every animal at Cowes, whether big or small.”

The Green Tree Schools Award is a free programme provided by the Woodland Trust, with resources and support to help schools engage pupils in practical environmental projects and develop a lasting connection with nature.
