Year 9 and 10 Students Display Remarkable Resilience at IoW Schools Athletics Championships

On Tuesday 8th May we took 30 students across years 9 & 10 to compete in the second day of the IOW Schools Athletics Championships held at The Ray Scovell athletics track in Sandown.

They competed against nine other secondary schools in track and field disciplines. Although we were short on numbers across both age groups, the students who came to compete were committed and showed great resilience and teamwork. Each individual had to compete in maximum events to help gain as many points as possible. This meant for some they had to go out of their comfort zone and take part in events they wouldn’t have necessarily chosen.

  • The year 9 girls came 6th overall which was great considering they only had five competitors.
  • The year 9 boys came 5th overall
  • The year 10 girls came 5th overall.
  • The year 10 boys came 9th – special well done to the four boys who competed and did as much as they could.
  • With all the points combined across years 9 & 10 this gave us 6th place overall.

The students showed true commitment to the team to which they did an amazing job to help the overall team by taking part in all they could. They all showed great sportsmanship by cheering on their peers which gave our competitors a boost, especially for the 3000m run!

Medal winners:

Year 9 Girls:

  • Maia. U – 2nd 1500m
  • Gigi. C – 3rd in triple jump
  • Huge effort on the relay but just missed out on the bronze and came 4th.

  • Zeeshan – 3rd In triple jump

Year 10 Girls:

Special thanks again to our amazing P.E team from CEC who hosted the event alongside The Bay.

Thank you to the volunteers from the IOW Athletics club for giving up their time for a second day to help run many field events and have the use of their equipment.

Thanks to our amazing 6th form sports leaders Eadie. S, Thea. H, Olivia. C, Caitlyn. D who came to help with running the teams, helped with collecting results, giving out the medals and writing positions out. They were a huge help to which again this event wouldn’t have run as smoothly without them. Thank you girls.

Well done to all the students who competed!
